Why am I linking to 'Pixistar.com/Credit.aspx'-something and not the Artist's Homepage or Profile?

Because this way Pixistar can provide the artist with some stats about their base's popularity and who is using it, and to provide you some info about what bases you have used and the popularity of your dolls.
It is also to provide links to artist's sites that won't die if the artist moves or goes on hiatus.

What if an artist tells me not to link Pixistar, and link a different site instead?

Then you should do what the artist asks. Link the other site and don't link the Pixistar credit page.

You should probably tell them that Pixistar credit links will help them track the popularity of their bases and ensure that people can still find them if their site goes down or moves, but in the end, everyone should be alowed to decide how their work gets used and linked to.
